Wandering around a historic attraction, admiring lavish interiors inside and luxurious gardens outside, is how many Britons often spend a bank holiday weekend.

But, with historic palaces, mansions and stately homes currently closed to visitors, the only people at deserted houses and grounds are the people who maintain them.

Among them are London’s Hampton Court Palace – once a favourite residence of Henry VIII, Jacobean mansion Audley End House in Essex and medieval fortress Powis Castle in Wales.
